Built on Bluemira
Nothing on this site would exist without two open-source programs from the fusion community. BlueAgent is the workbench around them, not a replacement for either — so this page says what they are, what they do in the product, and where they come from.
Bluemira
Bluemira is an integrated design tool for future fusion reactors: a framework in which a whole machine — plasma, magnets, vessel, blanket, and the radial build that ties them together — is described as code and built into geometry. It grew out of two earlier codes, BLUEPRINT and MIRA, and has been developed in the open since 2021 by the bluemira team at UKAEA and Fusion for Energy. It is free software under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 or later.
In BlueAgent, Bluemira is the thing you are looking at. The sliders in the Tweaker drive a Bluemira build; the cut-open machine and the CAD are its output; the plasma shape is its equilibrium; the coils, the ripple at the plasma edge and the inboard build are computed by its own solvers. Every project you make here is a Bluemira project, and its files open in Bluemira anywhere.
PROCESS
PROCESS is UKAEA’s systems code — the Power Reactor Optimisation Code for Environmental and Safety Studies. Where Bluemira builds one machine in detail, PROCESS sizes the whole plant at once: from a few hundred inputs and the constraints you choose it finds a design point that satisfies the physics and the engineering limits together, and says which limits it is sitting on. It is open source under the MIT licence.
In BlueAgent a project can carry a PROCESS deck beside its Bluemira build. Reading a run is free on every plan: the design point, the constraints it sits on, the difference to another run or to EU-DEMO. Running one — re-solve, scan a range, adopt the solved point into the sliders — is the PROCESS add-on, and included with BlueAgent SCI.
What BlueAgent adds
A hosted installation of both, so a course or a group works in one environment instead of thirty. The Tweaker, which turns a build config into sliders with the physics attached and the consequences drawn on the machine. The knowledge base and the glossary. And the agent — Becky, Hartmut, Sabine — who reads the build, the run and the screen, and teaches, argues or reviews. BlueAgent does not change Bluemira: it runs the project’s development branch as published and follows it closely, and your project stays a plain Bluemira project.
Licences, links, names

- PROCESS
- MIT. Source and documentation: github.com/ukaea/PROCESS and ukaea.github.io/PROCESS.
- The exact versions
- Listed inside the workspace, under Licences, beside every other component and its licence — for signed-in members, because a list of installed versions is also a list for somebody choosing an exploit. This website’s own list is at licences.
- Names
- Bluemira and PROCESS are the projects’ own names and belong to them. BlueAgent is made by windingpack and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, UKAEA or Fusion for Energy.
